Art Portfolio Project #2: Perspective Project (Room With a View)
Stage #1
For this project, I began with researching different drawings associated with one - point perspective. (Here is my pinterest page for it.) I wanted to start of with a subject I was familiar with, since I have done several projects with one point perspective in the past. Subsequently, I began sketching a "room" with a one point perspective in order to note which direction the windows would be leaning toward, as well as which lines could be draw at 180 degrees. However, I did notice that the lines that represented my walls were inaccurate, since they went behind the window. |
My next step was is begin to sketch furniture in the one - point perspective, such as beds and wardrobes. I also experimented with the shading of certain areas, such as the window's direction toward the sun, and the shadow at the foot of the doorways. however, my bed and wardrobe lacked a certain dimension, and did not correspond to my horizon line. Nevertheless, I noted that this element should be focused on and perfected for the final project.
One technique that I was considering incorporating into my artwork were zentangles, which I felt could bring originality. I decided to disregard my focus on the furniture's dimensions, but rather the design of my piece. However, since I was focusing on windows the most, I was still perfecting which direction my perspective lines would go, in order to produce an authentic image.
Although I had initially intended to draw a window perspective from a bedroom, I felt that drawing a living instead would be easier under time constraints. Nevertheless, I began to have a much clearly idea of where each object would be placed; the window at the center (since it has the view), the doorway on the left or right of the window, and a painting on the left side of the wall. I also drew a couch as my primary piece of furniture, and I had a smoother time determining which one of my perspective lines could be used to draw the length and height of my couch. After some assistance from Michelle, I also understood which aspects of the couch had to be 180 degrees, such as the direction of the cushions.
Stage #2
With my final sketch, I had an epiphany - incorporate two - point perspective into my artwork as well. I had finalized the placement of my central areas; the door, the window, and the couch. With two point - perspective, I took a day or so to research, but it I determined to use it, since I had never produced an artwork with it before. With this technique, I understood which directions the lines should be drawn at, in order to produce a city.
At this point of the project, I began to transfer my final sketch onto a larger piece of paper. However, something that I did struggle with was coming up with creative ideas and designs for my buildings. I noticed that on a larger scale, there were plenty of areas were I should include some sort of technique. Nevertheless, one technique that I felt that I was better at was actually drawing both one point and two perspective in a somewhat authentic fashion.
Reaching a creative slump, I decided to divert my attention back to my zentangle idea. Of course, since I did not have too much time left, I wanted to implement a simple zentangle, which I did, drawing a series of dots and circle on top of each line (which I spaced by 1 mm). Nevertheless, I do believe that if I had better planned out my project, I would have been able to use a more complex or exciting zentangle design.
Stage #3
At my final stage, I alternated with sketching and coloring in my artwork. The medium I used were colored pencils again, which I felt would be better suited for this project. However, in hindsight, I feel that perhaps graphite pencils would have made the project look more authentic and life like.
In this stage, I had finally selected everything I would sketch. I also decided in add in a miniature one point perspective as the painting, basing it off of Ancient Roman architecture.
Overall, in comparison to my other piece, I am more proud with the outcome with this one. I did like how I also incorporate two point perspective into my window. However, I do wonder if I had more time or a better plan I could have used another medium such as graphite pencils or paints. Also, I do wish that I had shaded better with the colored pencils, in order to have created a stronger shadow. I do understand how to shade, which with colored pencils is adding a certain amount of weight to the pencil, but I could have used layering.
