Thus is a visual representation of one of my favorite songs, which is "Sounds of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel. For this piece of artwork, I didn't know how to incorporate Zen Tangle designs into a creative piece of art. However, once I had made a list of black and white media (i.e, black and white movies and TV shows), I came to an epiphany; why don't a do a song? I believe that this idea came to me when I listening to a song by one of my favorite artists, Simon and Garfunkel. The song "Sounds of Silence" communicates a very vague yet deep meaning, of which I am very interested in. Whenever I listened to the song, I have always had an imaginative scene for each of the lyrics.
Subsequently, I decided to make my project in comic form, dedicating each box to a line in the song, which was accompanied with an image. As I drafted this art piece, I tinkered with a number of Zen Tangle designs, trying to figure out which one was the most appropriate for each scene. My final draft was slightly different from my first, design wise. Nevertheless, I retained the basic Zen Tangle designs and scenarios I had created previously.
I believe I drew inspiration from Global Class in a way, because I had been learning about past and present revolutions, such as French and Egyptian, respectively. I felt that the idea of a group of people all uniting over a certain cause, whether it be religious or political really corresponded with my art piece. In the song, the narrator is observing with disdain, a group of people worshipping a false god, and refusing to acknowledge anything moral or true. This also reminded me of the dystopian novels, such as Fahrenheit 451, where society suppresses thinking and only focuses on a certain goal. Therefore, the song can be an analogy for a society that is becoming more and more narrow minded. But with this art piece, my only objective is not to force feed the reader the meaning of the song, because it is grossly ambiguous. However, I just want to convey my interpretation of the song, which such a meaning and haunting tune.
